Betaxolol is used to treat hypertension, arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, glaucoma, and is also used to reduce non-fatal cardiac events in patients with heart failure. Betaxolol is a beta-1 adrenoceptor selective antagonist, while timolol, levobunolol, carteolol and metipranolol are mixed agonist/antagonists that block both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenoceptor sites. Betaxolol: This beta adrenoceptor antagonist is applied topically as eye drops. Betaxolol hydrochloride is chemically described as 2-propanol, 1- [4-[2-(cyclopropylmethoxy) ethyl] phenoxy]-3-[(1-methylethyl) amino]-, hydrochloride, (±)-. It has the following chemical structure: Each tablet for oral administration contains 10 mg or 20 mg of betaxolol hydrochloride equivalent to 8.94 mg or 17.88 mg of betaxolol respectively.
